Huddle Eyes Fourth-Straight Title at USATF Women’s 10 km Championships

USATF Press Release

BOSTON – Olympian and reigning USATF Athlete of the Week Molly Huddle seeks to continue her winning streak on the roads since early September, eyeing a fourth straight USATF Running Circuit victory at the USATF Women’s 10 km Championships Monday in Boston, hosted by the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women.

The USATF Women’s 10 km Championships are the tenth stop on the 2015 USATF Running Circuit. The top fifteen finishers at each race on the circuit qualify to compete in the 2015 .US National 12K, which takes place on November 15 in Alexandria, Virginia.

Similar to last year, when Huddle won the USATF Running Circuit overall title, the Providence-based runner continues to light up the circuit, having won the USATF 20 km, 5 km and 10 Mile titles. Clearly in fine form, Huddle not only has her eyes set on another big win, but finally taking over the lead of the overall standings, where she currently sits second to Brianne Nelson, 55.5-52.5. A win would move her up into sole possession of first.

Huddle’s top competition could very well come from fellow Olympian Kim Conley. While Conley only started racing again in the second half of the year last month at the USATF 5 km Championships, where she placed fifth overall, she’s clearly shown both the strength and speed to challenge for a podium finish.

Similarly, Huddle’s training partner, Emily Sisson, enters off a third place showing at the USATF 5 km Championships and will seek a 1-2 finish similar to what took place last year at the .US National 12K. At the race last November, Sisson bid her time, pacing herself perfectly throughout to come up big against veteran talent, including edging Conley by 21 seconds.

Nelson is also entered in Monday’s competition. The Colorado-based runner is having a fine 2015 season, including three top three finishes in USATF Running Circuit competition. Nelson’s challenge for top three is both expected and would give her a nice cushion in the circuit standings where she would nearly be guaranteed a top two finish overall.

Rachel Ward is another top competitor taking part in Monday’s championship event. Ward finished sixth at the USATF 5 km Championships and enters as the top returnee from the 2014 edition, where she placed third behind Olympian Amy Cragg and Sara Hall.

Finishing just behind Ward at last year’s event was Kellyn Taylor, who enters the action in Boston coming off a fine seventh place showing at the USATF 10 Mile Championships last weekend in the Twin Cities. Taylor is a consistent threat for a top five finish and will look to utilize the speed that earned her a bronze medal finish at the Pan Am Games over 5,000m this past summer.

Boston Athletic Association teammates Emma Bates and Juliet Bottorff are both seemingly ready to challenge for top three. Bates makes her pro debut on the roads, coming off a stellar collegiate career at Boise State. For Bottorff, she continues to build an impressive pro resume, which includes two top five finishes in USATF Running Circuit action, including a fifth place finish at the USATF 10 km Championships in 2014.

Alisha Williams and Tara Welling both hope to build on fine performances at the USATF 10 Mile Championships last weekend. Williams earned a fifth place finish, while Welling placed eighth overall. Both are extremely experienced over the 10 km distance.

Legendary distance runner Joan Benoit Samuelson is entered, as well. The 58-year old Olympic gold medalist is entered in Sunday’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon, so it remains to be seen how competitive she’ll be turning around the next day and competing over the speedy 10 km distance.

Other notable competitors competing in Monday’s event, include Sarah Pagano and Mara Olson, who finished ninth and tenth overall at the USATF 5 km Championships last month, USATF Running Circuit veterans Mattie Suver and Katie DiCamillo, along with Rochelle Kanuho, Megan Goethals and 2014 top ten finishers Katie Kellner and Meghan Peyton.
